Producer and rapper Timbaland has apologized after being criticized for suggesting that Justin Timberlake should „muzzle“ Britney Spears.

Spears revealed details of her relationship with Timberlake between 1999 and 2002 in her recent memoir.

Earlier this week, Timbaland said, „I wanted to call and say, ‚Man, you got to muzzle that girl‘.

However, after an outcry on social media, he said, „I apologize to Britney’s fans and to her.

During an interview at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Timbaland made his initial comments in front of an audience.

An audience member asked Timbaland if he was interested in Timberlake’s 2002 hit single „Cry Me A River,“ which Timbaland co-wrote and co-produced with Timberlake and which was inspired by the former NSync star’s breakup with Spears.

In her autobiography, The Woman Inside Me, Spears said she had an abortion during her relationship with Timberlake.

Spears also wrote that she and Timberlake cheated on each other and that „Cry Me A River“ and its video – in which a Britney impersonator dates another man – made her a „lost whore. The Heart of America’s Golden Boy.“

At the October event, Timbaland responded to the question by saying, „She’s going crazy, right?“ Then made the comment that silenced Spears.

Fans strongly criticized him on social media. One said, „Imagine a woman in 2023 who should be wearing a gun for speaking her mind, especially after 13 years of abuse and silence.

Spears is under supervision until 2021, a legal arrangement that controls many aspects of her life.

Other fans believe that Timbaland’s comments were partially influenced by reports that Spears refused to work with him in the mid-2000s.

Timbaland is one of the most prolific producers in R&B and hip-hop, having worked with Nelly Furtado, Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, Jay-Z, Tweet, Lil Kim and Timberlake.

As an artist, he has also scored chart hits with songs such as „The Way I Are,“ „Give It To Me,“ „Apologize“ and „Morning After Dark.
